The Speaker's Booth

All of the in-field entertainment at Principal Park is controlled within this one room. Pictured here are the controls for manning the intercom system at the ballpark. A microphone is set up for live commentary on the game done by one of the employees of the home team.

The Brains Behind the Ball

Running all of the systems of an entire ballpark takes a lot of processing power. Principal Park has a number of server towers such as the one pictured here in order to handle all of the computing necessary for the automatic ball/strike detector as well as handling the communication between the control room and the people out in the stands.

An Eye From the Sky

The Minor League games get a lot of television coverage, and that coverage comes from the many cameras that are stationed around Principal Park. There are a number of both manually operated cameras as well as static cameras that are always watching the field for the best plays. Cameras are placed all around the field both high up in the stands and also closer to the field.

Score Check

In order to control the scoreboard at Principal Park, they have this device which has all of the buttons necessary for keeping track of everything that could happen during a game. This computer is used by people in the control room to keep the fans up to date with what has happened in the game. It has buttons for showing that a runner is on a base or for showing how many balls have been thrown so far.

1.) Home Team Clubhouse

Used primarily as a spot to store equipment, the home team's dugout is lavishly filled with couches, chairs and televisions.

2.) Historic Team Photos

In a hallway leading to indoor viewing suites, a wall is lined with photos remembering the individuals who played for the Iowa Cubs.

3.) Sec Taylor Memorial

The desk found outside of various suites commemorates Sec Taylor, a famed Des Moines Register sports writer and a rich part of the Principal Park history. Before being renamed to Principal Park, the stadium was referred to as the Sec Taylor Stadium, a monument to the local celebrity.

4.) Producers Booth

The producer's booth is the main hub for the audio and visual effects found in Principal Park. Along with a microphone and soundboard, the room includes various computers and televisions to ensure that the staff members are giving the best experience to viewers in person and at home.

5.) Clubhouse Kitchens

Located behind outfield, the clubhouse kitchens primarily serve to adapt to both the visitor's and players' diets.

The Many Faces of the Iowa Cubs

The entrance to Principal Park features framed photos of the five different logos officially used by the Iowa Cubs.

Although having existed as a minor league baseball team since 1969, the modern-day Iowa Cubs did not become affiliates of the MLB's Chicago Cubs until 1982. Originating as the Iowa Oaks, the team was bought out in 1981 by the Chicago Cubs and officially rebranded in 1982. Created during the team's first re-brand in 1982, the Iowa Cubs logo has remained the same since it's inception. However, over time, a number of alternate and "identity" logos have been released.

The First Logo

Heavily based on their affiliate MLB team the Chicago Cubs, the Iowa Cubs' logo is fairly simple. With the same color scheme and base logo as their MLB counterpart, the only difference is the addition of "Iowa." While this is still considered the team logo, issues with visual aesthetics and center alignment led the team to introduce alternate logos more likely to appeal to consumers.

Creating Alternate Logos

With their original logo presenting issues with alignment and consumer attraction, the Iowa Cubs decided to roll out an alternate "Character Cap Logo" that would be used on merchandise and some jerseys.

"First in the Nation"

First introduced in 2019, the Iowa Caucuses logo comes from a themed Iowa Cubs game celebrating the state's caucus occurring before any other in the US. The team wore jerseys and sold specialty merchandise featuring this logo during a game in August of 2019.

Celebrating Hispanic and Latino Heritage

In 2019, as a part of an initiative called Copa de la Diversión, the Iowa Cubs sported a new name, logo and jersey for three games celebrating Hispanic and Latino heritage. They called themselves the "Demonios de Des Moines" (Demons of Des Moines) for the event.

In collaboration with Marvel Entertainment for the Defenders of the Diamond event, a comic-book version of Cubby features the bear holding a baseball bat.

The Iowa Cubs' Marvel Meld

Released in 2022, Marvel Entertainment teamed with Minor League Baseball to redesign logos for 96 MiLB teams taking part in Marvel's "Defenders of the Diamond" event. The Iowa Cubs were one of these teams and received a comic-book-style logo of their mascot Cubby. The logo redesign was featured on uniforms and merchandise during three Marvel-themed games, with plans to wear them again at future Defenders of the Diamond events.
